Classic Music Therapy in the Emergency Department Setting A majority of patients presented to the emergency department (ED) are usually anxious and experiencing some kind of pain. These two characteristics are among the most common subjective symptoms presented to the care providers in the ED setting. According to Negrete (2011), ED is considered to be a frightening and threatening place, and patients coming to the department for pain often succumb to even more pain caused by the increase in the patients’ anxiety in this unfamiliar and highly technical environment. Often the nurses are not able to control the patients’ pain and anxiety, something that often makes them feel frustrated in their abilities. The use of classic music therapy is one of the alternative therapies that are gaining popularity in the field of healthcare. The existing body of evidence indicate that music interventions can be implemented to reduce anxiety in the ED setting since the intervention has proven to have significant anxiolytic effects in various healthcare settings (So, 2013). Therefore, this evidence-based project focuses on the classic music therapy in the ED setting. The target population includes patients admitted to the ED. The intervention strategy to be evaluated is the use of classical music by patients in the ED waiting area, which is compared to the lack of it. The desired outcomes are reduced levels of anxiety and pain. The PICOT question for the EBP project is as follows: For patients admitted to the Emergency Department, can the use of classical music therapy for between 30 to 60 minutes, as compared to the lack of it, reduce the levels of pain and anxiety for the patients? P- Patients admitted to the Emergency Department I-The use of classical music therapy for between 30 to 60 minutes C-Not using classical music therapy O- Reduction in the levels of pain and anxiety T- 30 to 60 minutes of listening to classical music References Negrete, B.
