Drinking age

Description The MLDA should remain at 21 years of age. The US is facing serious problems due to underage drinking. With the MLDA of 21 in effect, there are fewer deaths by vehicle accidents, fewer problems with underage drinking, and less of a chance that the youth will be alcoholics and binge drink (Carpenter, Christopher, and Carlos 95). Alcohol consumption among young adults affects the sleep cycle leading to impaired learning and memory. The MADD argues it would be more difficult to control binge drinking in underage if the drinking age is lowered. By keeping the MLDA at 21 years of age, people are less likely to be involved in a highway incident caused by drunk driving. MLDA 21 should not be lowered because if the MLDA were to be lowered to 18 years of age, we would see an immediate increase in sales in the alcohol industry. In the past, increased consumption of alcohol and sales followed the lower minimum legal drinking age (Carpenter, Christopher, and Carlos 96). Alcohol was predicted to be one of the richest industries at the time. One effect of lowering the US MLD led to several problems like increased road accident due to careless driving and drinking driving. Most school students were also involved in drinking hence affecting their academic performance (DeJong, William, and Jason 107). These helped in providing more safety for our country by encouraging more 18-year-old kids to enlist in the military during a time when we needed it (Wagenaar, Alexander and Traci 206). Those 18+-year-olds were given the privilege of buying and consuming alcohol legally. Lowering the MLDA to 18 will cause a business to flourish which will ultimately lead to an increase in profits by a significant amount. On the other hand, the MLDA should remain at 21 because of significant benefits. Many representatives from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IHHS) support the fact that, the MLDA in most of the US states has been 21 and since the 1970s, drinking among young adults and students has reduced. This shows that keeping the MLDA at 21 will stop the majority of the underage youth from drinking illegally (DeJong, William, and Jason 107). Also, high school students and young adults are around the age group that can legally start driving and the age group around where most kids drink illegally, just shows how it’s beneficial not to lower the MLDA. Teenage who consume drinks engage in careless and unprotected sex with more partners than those who do not drink. This risk their lives to various STDs increased pregnancy and AIDS. Various studies show that MLDAs of 21 will help in reducing alcohol-realted crashes among young adults, drinking driving and reduce drinking. This will also help in saving people’s lives both off road and on road. According to some studies, 72 per cent of adults believe that the MLDA should remain at 21 (DeJong, William, and Jason 108). Also, According to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving and traffic safety, keeping the MLDA at 21 will only help save more lives than lowering the age. The enaction of 21 law led to the reduction in the number of young people involving themselves in road accidents and alcohol-related crushes. Most young adults who get involved in drinking are not able to make proper life decision because most of the time, they don’t even purchase the alcohol by themselves (Gruenewald and Paul 1822). Approximately 1,000 lives are being saved every year because of the 21 drinking age.
