Write 500 words on where your view of mental illness fits within the orientations described by Mechanic in the latter part of this reading. The reading is in Subject reserve and also in the Resources folder. Articulate what you can learn from other approaches to understanding mental illness to which you do not gravitate. From the textbook, in Ch 12, to what do the terms ‘risk factors’ and ‘protective factors’ refer? Describe three of each, and why or how they buffer against developing a mental health issue? Reference using APA6th. The reference list does not count towards word count. (200 words).

“Factors that increase the likelihood the an individual or group of people will develop a condition or illness; they are measured in terms of consequence and likelihood” (Hungerford 2015).
•Individual attributes low self- esteem, physical illness
•Social and economic circumstances – loneliness, bereavement & low income, poverty
•Environmental factors – Injustice and discrimination.
Protective factors (definition from text book to be included)
“Factors that decrease the likelihood that an individual or group of people will develop a condition or illness’ they are measured in terms of consequence and likelihood” (Hungerford 2015).
•Good Physical Health
•Positive social support – family friends and community
•Resilience – ability to problem solve and manage stress.
