Strategic and Operational Risk Management and Occupational Safety and Health Plan

  1. List and define the basic principal steps of risk management:
    • briefly discuss the rationale to each of the steps; and outline advantages and disadvantages if any that each of the principal steps offers an organisation. This is best done by using an example of an organisational loss to demonstrate that had the principal step been applied it would have reduced or eliminated the loss.  This must be done to each of the principles and supported by a reference.

NOTE: Attempt to use an example that itself demonstrates that the loss occurred because of the failure to apply the principle that you are discussing.

  1. Make 5 key strategic risk management recommendations to your CEO that would assist in the reduction or elimination of organisational loss. Clearly demonstrate by the use of an example {use the same examples from (i) above} how you would implement each of your recommendations into the organisational framework and how you would measure their effectiveness and success.  You must justify your implementation and measurement strategies with supporting references.

Preparation and Project instructions

Before starting this part of the project, you should have gained a thorough understanding of the risk management principles, process, and their application aligned with the Occupational Safety and Health Legislative requirements.  Much information is available on risk management and its application in organisational strategies.

Be prepared to demonstrate the reliability of your recommendations through supporting references.  Most of all you must be clear on how the application of risk management strategies can reduce or eliminate occupational safety and health loss to your organisation.  The question will be asked by your CEO “Are your recommendations and supporting documentation good enough for me to implement a Risk Management Program?”

Some hints, obtain Strategic and Operational Risk Management and Occupational Safety and Health Plans from organisations.  Review the plans and use them as a template for the development of your assignment and always pay attention to the statutory requirements.  I suggest that you obtain access to relevant Australian/New Zealand Standards such as AS/NZS 31000 Risk Management-principles and guidelines, and AS/NZS 4801 and AS/NZS 4804 Occupational health & safety management systems.

Your objective is to clearly demonstrate an understanding of and application of the risk management principles (using examples) and convince your CEO through your recommendations that the implementation of risk management principles will significantly benefit the organisation.  Your recommendations are critical, they are to be practical and easily integrated into existing business management strategies.  You must show by way of an example how your recommendations will add value to the organisational plan and how they will reduce costs and injury or harm to persons in the workplace.
